First the action, keys and case parts are removed. Bosendorfer built their piano around the plate.

Here I am sawing off a block which latter will be screwed back in place.

This will allow room for the plate to be removed and is in fact the way many pianos are constructed. If the plate should for some reason need to be removed in the future, this will be a simple matter.

A small section of plate which had no structural significance extended under a gusset for the rim, rather than cut the gusset, I decided to cut the plate by drilling a series of holes. In this photo I have begun to mark and center punch the holes.

Now the plate will clear the case when removed. The ragged edge will be ground to a smooth radius after removal.

Removal of strings. Much time and care was taken recording string sizes and lengths.
This piano had been restrung and wire sizes had been changed. The original scale was penciled on the bridge during manufacture, just barely readable, this was valuable information which will be used during restringing.

Old tuning pins and screws are all removed and recorded or saved in order.
|

Plate is finally hoisted out.
